Location: Ithaca, NY
Nickname: Big Red
Conference: Ivy League
Last Year’s Record: 21-10
Why they’ll make it: Cornell is entering this season as the favorite to win its third consecutive Ivy League title and with good reason. The top six players from last year’s rotation return and they are very talented. Guard Louis Dale won the league’s player of the year in 2007-2008, forward Ryan Wittman is a two-time first-team all-conference selection, and center Jeff Foote is the reigning defensive player of the year in the league. The Big Red finished three games better than the next best team in the Ivy last season. Expect that distance between it and the rest of the conference to increase.
Why they won’t make it: Let’s face it, it would take numerous injuries for this team to not make the NCAA tournament. All the Big Red needs to do is win the regular season title in the Ivy to qualify for the Big Dance. Coach Sydney Johnson has Princeton competitive again, but they don’t have nearly the firepower to challenge Cornell. It’ll be a complete shock if Cornell isn’t dancing.
